Dusthya Shasthya Kendra (DSK)

DSK, conducted in November 2013, aimed to create accountability and ownership of water and sanitation points by building community based groups and employing co-payment methods to finance the construction of facilities through cash and kind.

Key findings: Sustainability was difficult to achieve among the community after the handover of facilities to the community, often requiring the additional input in the form of supervision from the NGO. While community ownership and commitment was created during project activities, it was difficult for the urban poor to adequately carryout responsibilities after the project phase out and community hand-over due to economic hardship and more pressing daily tasks; corruption and mistrust among community members was another factor achieving sustainability still remains a challenge.
